“Previous Knowledge”, a quintet for piano and four individual percussion stations, is dedicated to and focused upon the great musical contributions made by decades of iconic jazz performers. Each movement indirectly makes musical reference to the musical spirits of a small listing of chosen artists, artists that were instrumental in determining and shifting the direction of jazz. Each movement has its own distinct personality but reaches into each of the other movements producing a detailed sense of continuity throughout the total work. Although the focus of the piece is the spirit of the musical statements left to us by the noted artists, the piece itself does not require any improvisational input from the ensemble performers. Improvisation is an option in the piece in the 3rd movement from measure 190 through 195 during the double-time G blues, but only at the discretion of the ensemble conductor or the ensemble performers. The piece will be totally complete without any improv statements at all.
